Bruce Levenson decided to give back to the community once he ended his ownership stint with the Atlanta Hawks. According to PR News, what he did was team up with the University of Maryland to form the Do Good Institute. The Do Good Institute has an appropriate name because its functions revolve around doing well for several entities. The Institute’s missions can greatly benefit the environment, the economy and people who need assistance. This project was the first project that someone developed for the sole purposes of creating volunteer leaders.
The people who enter this program receive training on how to become non-profit creators, leaders and mentors. Many of the students who join the program come out of it and start giving back straightaway. Ben Simon, for example, graduated and developed the Food Recovery Network, an organization that eliminates waste by giving people the opportunity to purchase foods at a tremendous discount.
The program works by searching for grocery products that the stores consider as waste and then offering those products to people who want to purchase them at huge discounts. The food in question contains items that a grocery store may consider as not quite expired but not quite good enough to keep on the shelves. Waste numbers drop drastically through these processes.
Bruce Levenson (brucelevenson.com) has always had a huge interest in joining projects that “do good” for people. He has laid the foundation for companies such as TechTarget, which is a company that assists others with information technology. Additionally, Levenson dedicated his time and funds to projects like the I Have a Dream Foundation, which helps students to get the education that they desire. The Do Good Institute has been succeeding ever since its creation. Levenson expects it to continue to succeed as students graduate and start working to make a difference in various areas.
The Personal Impact Of Totalitarians
Thor Halvorssen is a victim of autocracy. He has seen his family members destroyed by the horrors of the dictators of Venezuela. Despite the horrors he has witnessed he maintains a strong attitude of resilience in the face of such adversity. Losing your mother to political violence and seeing your father arrested for investigating corruption can have the effect on you. Now he does everything he can to fight the authoritarianism.
Spreading The Message
The most important aspect of Halvorssen’s activism is spreading the message and encouraging people to stand up against the oppressive regimes they live under. This might involve everything from sending balloons with pro-American messages over the border of North Korea or it may involve using documentaries to tell the story of people who have experienced the dark side of resisting their governments. Indeed, this is probably the most important aspect of what Halvorssen does. During one particularly noteworthy adventure he was even arrested for trying to film a documentary about a Buddhist church the Vietnamese government censored. Although he was able to convince the authorities to free him this stands as an example of the dangers he faces.
Gathering Support Across The World
This isn’t something that Halvorssen is able to do by himself. In order to succeed he needs the help of others who are also interested in taking down oppressive regimes. This is why he created the Human Rights Foundation. The Human Rights Foundation focuses on trying to concentrate efforts around the world to resist dictatorships. He has served as the president of the Human Rights Foundation since 2004 and played a key role in every major campaign the Human Rights Foundation creates.
