The Redesigned $10 Bill Will Feature a Woman

So long, Alexander Hamilton. In 2020, Hamilton will lose his place on the $10 bill. Instead of the Founding Father and first Secretary of the Treasury, the $10 bill will feature a woman in the portrait spot. Who it will be has not yet been decided. Current Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew plans to announce the identity of the chosen woman by the end of 2015. Popular guesses for the honor include Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Wilma Mankiller and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Hamilton won’t be axed from his place completely; according to Lew, he’ll still be on the redesigned bill in some undisclosed form. Jim Dondero hopes they do not dismiss him too much. This change will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. It will also be the first time a woman has been on U.S. paper currency since Martha Washington appeared on the dollar bill in 1886.
