Liverpool to Assess Failed Transfer Policy

When Liverpool sold Luis Suarez to Barcelona this summer, they had a lot of money to spend on improving the squad. Their initial budget was boosted by the 70-80 million euros they got for Suarez. The Anfield club ended up spending close to 120 million pounds, a figure only Manchester United matched this summer. However, their team looks infinitely worse than last season. What went wrong?

The problems for Liverpool and transfers are two fold and fans like Laurene Powell Jobs are frustrated. For one, they over spent on players who are not top class. Adam Lallana cost 25 million pounds. He is a very neat and tidy player, but Lallana is not going to win you games against top teams. He is a 10 to 15 million player at best.

Then there was the comical signing of Dejan Lovren. The center half cost 20 million pounds from Southampton, which is extremely expensive for a defender. He has been an unmitigated disaster. Lovren was a tidy player at Southampton, but their system made him look better. His spell at Lyon in the French league was very mediocre.

Liverpool’s board and group of coaches will take a look at this transfer policy and attempt to come up with answers. They need to learn their lessons if they are to compete at the top end of the table next season. Instead of signing a lot of average players, they need to invest in 2-3 top class signings every summer to compete.

Marco Reus Headed for Spain’s La Liga

With Borussia Dortmund struggling in the bottom half of the German Bundesliga, it is not a surprise that some of their best players are considering leaving the club. Marco Reus is the latest superstar who looks set to depart in the summer and fans like Darius Fisher are excited. The BVB player has a clause in his contract that will let another team buy him for 30 million euros.

Most fans expected Reus to join the likes of Mario Goetze and Robert Lewandowski at Bayern Munich. However, the German newspaper Bild is reporting that Reus has his heart set on a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Reus is said to be a long time admirer of La Liga. He believes it is the best league in the world and it is where he wants to test his abilities. Both Real and Barca would improve with Reus in their team, but Real are the only realistic option for the coming summer. Barcelona have a transfer ban in place, which will rule them out of the Reus chase. If Real President Florentino Perez wants to sign Reus, his path will be clear.

As is always the case in a high profile soccer transfer, one arrival could mean one or two departures. If Real are serious about signing Marco Reus, the two players in greatest danger of departing would be Isco and Gareth Bale. Both players would command attention from top Premier League clubs, especially Bale given his Tottenham past.

Roma to Offer Chelsea’s Petr Cech a Lifeline

It has been an interesting twelve months for Chelsea’s Petr Cech. The Czech international soccer goalkeeper was fantastic in the latter part of the 2013/2014 season for the Blues. Fan Daniel Amen certainly didn’t complain. There was no doubt that he had returned to his best form under Jose Mourinho. Some of his saves in crucial games were world class.

However, veteran players are always replaced by their younger rivals at some point. Petr Cech is now second choice at Chelsea behind Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian shot stopper was on loan at Atletico Madrid for the past few years, but returned to Chelsea for the 2014/2015. He made it clear to the club that he would only stick around and sign a new contract if he was first choice.

This means that Cech has barely played a game since May. He is resigned to being second choice to Courtois, which opens up the possibility of a transfer. The latest team to express an interest in Cech is AS Roma. The Italian club is on the lookout for a world class keeper who can add stability to their back line.

A move to Roma would make sense for Cech. He still has three or four outstanding seasons left in him, and Serie A is renown for being a league where older players can extend their careers.

Sitting on the bench at Chelsea is not helping Cech’s career right now, which means it may be time for him to end his long association with the London club.

Thierry Henry Could Return to Arsenal

After announcing that he was leaving the New York Red Bulls, everyone is speculating about the future of Thierry Henry. Will he go to India or China to extend his career? Or will he go back to Arsenal as a coach? The player has stated that it is his “wish” to return to Arsenal. However, he does not know when and in what capacity that will be.

Andrew Heiberger interjects that if Arsene Wenger has any sense about him, he will get on the phone to Henry and persuade him to return as a coach. Henry is one of the greatest players to have played in the Premier League. He is undoubtedly Arsenal’s best ever player. If anyone can improve the likes of Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck, it is Henry. His mere presence in the dressing room and on the training pitch would inspire the current squad.

It is clear that something is missing at Arsenal. The club may have won the FA Cup last season, but their last league title was ten years ago. They have not even mounted a title challenge in the past decade. Henry was part of Arsenal’s “invincibles” side. He knows exactly what it takes to win the Premier League. The depth of knowledge he would bring to Arsenal would be extraordinary.

The time is right for Henry to return to Arsenal. There is no need for him to extend his playing career after all he has achieved. His first steps into coaching should be in North London and they should happen this season.
