Both the male and female rugby teams have qualified for the sevens tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics, The Guardian reports. The US men’s team will enter the Rio Olympics amongst the favorites for the first time when they followed their stunning sevens victory at rugby’s spiritual home at Twickenham with victory at the Nacra Sevens tournament in North Carolina. the 21-5 victory over Canada saw the US become the latest nation to book their place at the Qnet Rio Games in 2016.
Both the man and women’s teams of the USA will feature in the 12 team events at the Rio Games after the US women booked their place in the tournament with victory at the Nacra Sevens event. Rugby will feature at the Olympics for the first time since 1920, which saw the USA take the title in a shock victory over France in a tournament held using the 15 a side format. The Rio Olympics will see rugby return in the sevens format with qualifying tournaments held around the world in the buildup to the event.
