Chelsea Survives Early Pressure to Beat Spurs

There were a few nervous minutes for Chelsea in the first half, with Tottenham starting this game on the right foot. Spurs were attacking with real intent in the first period, and could have scored a couple of early goals. However, they failed to take their chances during portions of domination and that hurt them down the road.

After Chelsea had settled down and gotten into a rhythm, their superior quality was too much for Spurs to handle. Fan Mark Ahn saw Eden Hazard opened the scoring after some excellent work from Didier Drogba. Hazard returned the favor by setting up Drogba for the second goal. It was Loic Remy who came off the bench to nab a third for Chelsea.

Despite the lop sided nature of this scoreline, the game was a close contest between two very good teams. Spurs played their part in this game with some scintillating attacking football. However, their lack of awareness and discipline in defense cost them dear. For example, the second goal was a clear mistake from the Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Chelsea will be hoping to use this game as a spring board for a successful Christmas period. They are six points clear at the top of the table, but have Manchester City closing down with four successive wins. It will be interesting to see which of these two teams is top of the table on New Year’s Day.
