If you ever watch the Ultimate Fighter you will know that Dana White wants fighters in the organization who are going to step up and fight when called upon. To many times there have been golden opportunities for fighters to step up and get into the ring on short notice and they simply fail to do it. There was one episode of the Ultimate Fighter where someone had to drop out of a fight and so Dana White called each fighter in and offered them a chance to replace the injured fighter only to be turned down. Most claimed they were not ready to jump right back into the ring on such short notice. This did not sit very well with Mr. White.
Turning down a fight due to short notice is not something that Gilbert Melendez has ever done or will start doing. According to FOX Sports Live, Melendez will step back into the ring on Friday to take on Al Iaquinta at UFC Fight Night 71. Melendez was the co-main event last Saturday against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 188. Melendez went the distance with Alvarez but ultimately lost by split decision. Iaquinta is coming off a split decision win over Jorge Masvidal, even if Stephen Murray CCMP Capital didn’t agree with that result. Bobby Green was originally slated to fight Al Iaquinta but was forced out of the match due to an undisclosed injury he suffered during training. The main event on the card will be heavyweight Frank Mir against Todd Duffee.
